It’sfunny how your personality changes when you’re unemployed. First, you start byenjoying the free time on your hands : sleep late, redecorate your appartment,maybe take a trip abroad. Meanwhile, as you’re not a complete slacker, you sendout dozens of applications. Some weeks later, you notice a decrease inself-confidence. You’re basically not a happy person. Too much freedom can killa man. You say to yourself you could be a bit more creative instead of whining allthe time. Then the money slowly starts to run out. That usually does the trick.Now you truly start to believe you’re not a part of capitalistic societyanymore. You are worthless, without value. Your social circle narrows. Intruth, you’re a bit embarrased that you’re not being a productive member ofsociety so you’re afraid to contact your very own friends. You feel you don’thave anything to say, really, and they must all have busy lives so.. Nevermind.

Of courseyou have plans, ideas, projects, creative endeavours. Then people start tellingyou to think positive, that Attitude is so important. Better to have a positivemindframe, they tell you, then things will start happening. Of course the folkstelling you this have had the same job for 5 years. They don’t deal with theblows that life gives some people – they’re observing it all from the sideline,careful not to get too close. Might get contaminated. Then again, the ones who have a decent occupation keep complaining that they're sick of their job! Oh, remember all those job applicationsyou keep sending? They all come back witha Thanks But No Thanks attached tothem. Now you start asking yourself too many questions. Some days you justwanna give up all hope. But, wait a minute.. Don’t they say that unemployedpeople are the best lovers because they have so much time to fuck? Ah, theglory days.. You remember them well. This was before you isolated yourself fromall your girlfriends because you’ve been hurt too much. It’s complicated : youeither run into girls that don’t know what they want, or you’re running afterunrequitted.. Love, you say? It comes with a pricetag. Nothing works anymore. Maybeyou’re getting too old for this shit. Anyway, the Heart is in on the deal aswell now. Bitterness starts setting in.

You askyour landlord if you can pay your rent in PositiveThinking. He doesn’t take it very well. Plus, now he knows for sure what he’sbeen thinking all along : he has a bum living under his roof. It doesn’t helpif you’re a clean-shaven, good-looking manchild, you have been marked. Your growing lack of self-confidence just receiveda special added bonus. Unemployee of the month. Then your circle of friends desintegrates somemore, because let’s face it, they live a busy life, filled with work andafter-work activities : they don’t have time to listen to you whine or help youout. Each man for himself. Welcome to the West. Only the strong survive. Seems likeyou just fell off the boat. You’re frustrated, and it starts to show. Of courseyou have some creativity in your rotten soul, so you write. Does it pay thebills? Nope, that was a rhetorical question. You’re not selling a product, you’rejust expressing your sensitive impressions of a man gone AWOL in troubled times.Can’t make money off that. You send drunken messages to the people that youcare about - because they somehow hurt you the most. Feelings.. Might as wellisolate yourself completely, look your demons straight in the eye, confront loneliness. A proven method to evolve and come back stronger. But first, some more whining. Everybody tells you how much they adoreyou, but they never seem to call or drop by. Maybe they just “adored” your stable,fun-having, love-giving, sensual alter ego. Ah, the ego. It’s still there whenyou go out for a drink - you’re not a complete loser, you still maintain a sociallife, you still have some supastar status. Sometimes you think that the old ego is just a mask to hide the embittered person you’ve become. But in your heart you know that it's just a piece of you that has to die to move on. Get rid of a false past for a better future. It’snot even the lack of a job, but just This Life And How It Is Played. We all have the same doubts. You’veseen it all before. Let it go. One day, you’ll be able to accept and give love again. Thesituation seems tragic, but never dramatic. Some will warn you not to become a “hater”. It’stoo late. You're not the same person they used to know. You'll never be the same again, but there's beauty in that. Move on and upwards. It’s nothingpersonal. That’s the way life goes. You have been warned. And some day, you’ll be back.

Ideas worth saving

TEDxFlanders | a critical view

Last Saturday, I attended TEDxFlanders in Antwerp. TED is an American initiative which stands for “Ideas worth spreading”, and the concept is simple : they invite speakers (innovators, scientists, philosophers, sociologists, inventors, trendsetters..) from all over the world to tell an inspiring story.

Now, some of these stories truly were inspiring, but some of the ideas were, well.. not really worth spreading.

First of all a big Mea Culpa for missing out on Olivia U. Rutazibwa’s talk on “Decolonizing the western mind”. I hope one day she will find it in her heart to forgive me for my lateness. The first presentation I did listen to was Aagje Beirens’ talk on MyMachine, an interesting project that allows children to build their dream machine, sparking creativity and imagination. A first high-point of the day was John Hunter’s talk about his World Peace Game for children : John Hunter is an inspiring teacher who is prepping several generations with the critical mind to survive in the decades to come, and who knows, some of them might utilize their knowledge to make this world a better place. An idea worth spreading, and quite inspiring to listen to : here’s a man who brings out the best in young people! Next up were two Flemish engineering students explaining their future projects to save energy. Innovating as their projects were, a minor point of criticism would be the obvious remark that some speakers clearly had very interesting ideas, but were not always rhetorically equipped to deliver the message in an entertaining way. And we all know that these days, “the medium is the message” as much as “the show must go on”.

To be quite honest, I was intellectually mesmerized by the highly scientific talk of experimentalist Tommaso Dorigo and theorist Peter Woit, but trying to understand the Collider Detector experiment at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) is like asking me to understand the mind of a woman : it will never happen.

Other ideas were perhaps less “worth spreading”, but delivered by charismatic speakers. Here we arrive at my “critical view”. Must be something I ate? Molly Crocket discussed very eloquently, and with emotional emphasis, about how our moral views could be determined by medication, and how our ethical vision could be influenced by what we eat. The point being : if we have a full stomach, or if we took a pill that made us more “mellow”, we could/would be much more tolerant towards other people and their viewpoint(s). The proposition then, was to give Prozac to diplomats in peace talks : in this way the Palistinian/Israelian problem could easily be resolved. I’m over-simplifying of course, but what bothered me most about her talk was the typical American “one-moral-that-cannot-be-questionned” attitude that lingered above this seemingly progressive brain study. Showing the Twin Towers on the video screen, and thus suggesting that maybe if those nasty terrorists would have taken a chill-pill before getting on the plane, this would have never happened? To suggest this is utterly ridiculous and potentially dangerous from a political point-of-view. Let’s face it, 9/11 happened because of some un-ethical, twisted economical (oil) and military (money) reasons, and that’s really all there’s to it. If you don’t want to investigate the darker corners of world politics, take the show to kindergarten. In other words, if I understand correctly… George Bush Junior should have never stopped sniffing cocaine : we would all live in a much better world.

Bernard Lietaer’s talk about the mono-culture of money made much sense to me, and eventhough I failed to grasp the full details of his idea, one thing remains clear: the world is “following” an economical and monetary system that has been failing us in the last 30 years (scientifically proven fact), so maybe it would be a good idea to start to look for alternatives.

I must add here that I was hoping to learn more about our system in these apocalyptic days of financial crises and environ/mental decay. These are high ambitions, I know.. But then again, we do live in troubled times that, I believe, merit such high expectations. So when Dan Brodsky-Chenfeld came up to deliver us his life-changing story (the all-American dream of someone who against all odds manages to fulfill his ambition to become a professional… sky-diver), I raised my eyebrows once again. Inspiring, of course. Emotional, too : having been in a car crash myself, I even had a lump in my throat.. But could we maybe talk about the air-pollution and the energy being wasted by flying sky-divers for what is nothing less than a luxury sport? Watch out, here’s that “critical view” again.

The next speaker, Jamie Anderson, was funny and entertaining as he explained how social media is all about “following the herd”. At the same time, his ideas left my brain the minute they entered my ears. Next!

Catherine Van Holder and Ine Dehandschutter are two ladies who decided they wanted something More out of life than “just living and working in Ghent”, so they embarked on a year-long journey to travel the world while still remaining active and working. Firstly : I hope they’re growing lots of trees to make up for the CO2 they wasted when flying to all these exotic places. Secondly, what’s wrong with staying in your little village for your whole entire life? Why this constant need to “go places, see the world”, a typical Western ambition (of which I have been guilty myself more than once)? And thirdly.. I wonder how their trip would have been if they hadn’t taken their laptop. My point? Life Style Design, as they called it, seems to me more like the “bored housewife syndrom”: we (the westerners) who have Everything we can dream of, still feel the need to indulge in even more Possibilities and Travels, looking for Something More “out there” (which we’ll never find), to make Our Lives even Richer. Moral issue here : we’re already living in the richest part of the world, and this still doesn’t make us happy? I would like to see them explain (and justify) their LSD idea to starving children in Africa. Yet again, in my humble but critical opinion : a dangerous idea to be spreading.

As you can tell, TEDxFlanders did stimulate my mind, and they closed the day with the wonderfully absurd philosopher Jean-Paul Van Bendegem, whose final message I interpreted as : “Don’t take everything you’ve been told today at face-value”. Mos Def Live at Montreux Festival 2000

In July 2000, after having released the Black Star album and his own Black On Both Sides, Mos Def goes all the way LIVE at the Montreux Festival. Determined to prove that “blues, jazz, rock'n'roll and hip-hop are one and the same music: those of black folks in America”, Mos Def doesn’t just bring a DJ and some beats (his younger brothers DCQ and the Gold Medal Man) to the stage. It’s a regular black star line up, including Will Calhoun (drums), T.M. Stevens (bass), Weldon Irvine (keys), Kevin Lewis (horns) and Roger Bonds (sax). This unbalanced rock/soul-meets-hip hop ensemble still makes it funky enough for 26-year old Mos Def to get his groove on, and the public obviously loves the whole experiment to def.

A friend of mine who was working at Montreux that year recorded the concert, straight from the mixing desk. Nice. As I was going through my MiniDisc Archives, I found this long forgotten recording and here it is, for your listening pleasure.. Enjoy at 160Kbps.

ZEITGEIST: MOVING FORWARD

Last year, I sailed on a boat to Panama with Captain Doug, as he drank heavy rum and I almost steered the boat into a huge oil tanker (somewhere between Columbia and Panama, in open sea, Captain Doug said : "Ok Peter, I'm gonna go to sleep now, you steer the boat!"). Great adventures. While floating on the boat, Captain Doug also made us watch the movie Zeitgeist, talking about the conspiracies of the American government, how aliens are taking over our world, what links Jesus and religion with the 9/11 attacks.. All very American and a bit far fetched, but then again, when I look at the "reality' surrounding me (political, social, environmental) it does makes some sense. The least you can say is, it makes you THINK.

The Zeitgeist Movement is about awareness (merci Jean-Claude), in favor of a fluid evolutionary progress, both personal, social, technological and spiritual.

"The human brain demands positive forms of environmental stimulus, at all stages of development - while also needing to be protected from other negative forms of stimulus."

In short, we're surrounded by stupid people doing stoopid stuff, mostly.

Yes, we humans have an influence on the Earth and our environment, and yes, the world that surrounds us (family / friends / society / world) influences us as a person, emotionally and spiritually- and has effects worldwide, environmentally and socially.

There is now a new Zeitgeist movie : ZEITGEIST: MOVING FORWARD.

Feed your brains with something else than TV series. Question authority. With so many people following false leaders : watch, organize and educate.

In fact, this might not be a bad time to start to give a damn.

Frame 313

Frame 313 was a collective of a drum'n'bass producers, mc's and video artists (VJ's) from Ghent. It featured Sibo Kano, Vincent Coen, Filip Cremers, Chris Clijsters (who later ran off to Asia or something), myself (aka BedaMC at the time) and Jelle the bass-advisor.. This was way back in 2001, and we were combining Live Visuals with computer-manipulated drum and bass sounds.. with the occasional vocal thrown over (although I think at the time I was either too shy or too stoned to really lay it on proper like).

Looking back, it was ahead of its time! Frame 313 did gigs in Charlatan, KultuurKafee.. I also remember a gig in a small bar in Ghent, with 4 or 5 TV sets placed across the venue, broadcasting these apocalyptic images as hard DnB beats were being played live and in sync (!) with the visuals. Memorable Times*

As you'd expect we've all gone on to be rich and famous now. But seriously.. it's time for a little Retrospective of those years.

Chronicles of the Brussels’ nightlife. Man enters Brasserie Verschueren with friend and girl, after a healthy dinner at La Braise. 1.3 kilos of grilled meat for two. Good food for good people. They meet a couple of friends and enjoy a nice evening of cosy chats and friendly vibes. Easy like Sunday morning. They go to Café Walvis in the city centre. Good music, strange atmosphere. Friend orders drink, and accidentally pushes a bottle of soda. Black-eyed woman starts screaming HYSTERICALLY, people start pushing violently, tension hangs high in the air. Mr Cocaine and Miss S. are looking for a fight. The drugs, obviously, do not work. The dark side. Man remains calm and friend (jiu jitsu expert) keeps head clear. Sensations, frustrations, reputations. Man meets guy. Guy starts to shout : “BE CAREFUL WITH THE WHISKEY!” Man says : “Don’t worry, I’m drinking rum..” Guy starts to shout at friend : “I’M NOT THE AGGRESSIVE ONE, I’M NOT THE ONE BREAKING THINGS, NO MATTER WHAT HE’S BEEN SAYING YOU KNOW!!!!!”. Paranoid android. Beyond comprehension, things get boring. So it seems we all have issues. Man and friend and girl finish their drinks, leave bar. Last drink at Bonnefooi. Sturdy security fellow explains the new bar rules before entering : “No drugs, no fights, and no hats.” Man and girl look at each other. [?] Welcome to the warped side. Things constantly change. Brussels reflects the chaos in our minds. Just another Saturday night, avoiding the pitfalls.

Remember : a hug a day keeps the demons at bay.

There was a time, not so long ago, when good records were made and simply put in the shops. Yes kids, I remember the nineties... A Tribe Called Quest, Pete and CL, Digable Planets, The Pharcyde, Beastie Boys, Young Disciples, Galliano, Dinosaur Jr, Lemonheads, Massive Attack.. and then some! Classic ALBUMS, with no filler. They seem rare now. If a mainstream hip hop, jazz, soul or rock album has two good songs on it, you're lucky.

There also used to be a time.. all you had to do was check liner notes, record labels (Jive, Talking Loud, Mo Wax, 4AD... to name but a few), or read music magazines in order to discover fresh & good music. I guess there just wasn't that much music around, and the good stuff (or the music that was quality to your taste) was easy to single out?

Nowadays, there's an explosion of bands, genres, singles, downloads, mash-ups, re-edits, songs & albums. Some of it only on mp3, some DIY, others still on big record labels with big marketing budgets..

And how do we find the good stuff in 2010? We "follow". Tastemakers, deejays, radio-personalities, famous people... and blogs. More than often though, we just randomly discover stuff on the internet. There are a couple of blogs that I follow and appreciate, but it sometimes leaves me with a bitter aftertaste to see them all flocking to digging the same "niche" artists. Let's face it, it's a new era, and anything goes. You could find a beautiful song or an artist worthwhile checking out, living on the same block from you, or come from Eastern Europe.. the next big thing doesn't necessarily have to come from London, NY or LA, breezy. Get hip to the kaleidoscopic chaos of the 21st century already. But hey, some might say, some things don't change: it's not what you do, it's who you know, right?

Anyway, all this banter to say I (re)discovered UK hip-hop artist Funky DL. An artist who started way back in 1995 as a 17-year-old MC, scored a 5 album deal with no management, won a MOBO award, released nearly 50 different 12 inches and 18 albums (!), toured and produced worldwide... and dropped his 19th album “The Interview” on BBE Records last year.

His promo album project "Back To Frank", where he samples Amy Winehouse, is available for FREE DOWNLOAD from www.funkydl.com/b2f.zip.

And this, my friends, is classic material.

Don't think you will find it in any of the hipster magazines, and it might not even get a CD or vinyl release, but the Funky DL sure drops the heat with self-made beats as he lyrically waxes on about life, love, struggles and drops wisdom like there ain't nothing to it but to do it. Only 12 years of cold hard working on your craft could make this kind of Hip Hop ART possible.

But don't take my word for it, go on and download IT, and find out for yourself.

PS: Also check his Advice about the Music Game, pt 1. I can't say I agree on every note, but he's got a point: keep working on your craft and sooner or later, things will happen.

Too bad I'm such a lazy rebel.

Intuition/paranoia

What we sometimes mistake for paranoia, is just INTUITION. It is what you call it, and what name you put to it.

Paranoia is the negative, coming from insecurity, seeing and sensing the bad in people because you don’t feel good about yourself.

Intuition is the positive, coming from self-knowledge, trusting your own senses and going with the flow to avoid things and people that make you feel uncomfortable.

So when you're like "Damn that guy annoys me.. he’s playing games with me or whatever.." and this makes you paranoid and not trust other people.. You could just as well think "Well I always sensed this guy was trouble so more power to me for seeing through people's games."

Have you ever asked yourself: how do my vibrations come off to other people? Simple, it depends on how THEY feel about themselves. If they feel negative, frustrated.. they’re gonna get bad vibes from you. If they feel secure, cool.. they'll laugh it off and tap you on the back with a smile.

What I’m trying to say is.. avoid people with bad karma, but realise that if they really bug you, you need to do some soulsearching first. They might have triggered the bad karma within you. If you feel this is not your natural state, get rid of it, look within yourself and find the strength to do your thing.

If you like the kind of music I like (i.e. good music).. December 2009 is crazy.

December 4th, Erik Rico at Bar Du Matin.. and Cheeba Cheeba at Bazaar. And something else.. already I forget.

December 5th, the L-Fêtes ladies will be spinning vinyl at Forty-Five/Libertine, and the same day, Blu Funk District comes hard again by inviting Illa J and Frank Nitt to Tavernier for some quality hip hop vibes. We're still on the same Saturday and FM Brussel Tonite will tear the roof off the library with the likes of Marc de Clive-Lowe and Vanessa Freeman.. and too many deejays to mention!

On Sunday the 6th of December, check out Dimanche Des Créateurs from 11h to 19h at BRASS (Vorst), chill out to the sounds of Fatoosan and other fly deejays- while buying some original creations by colorful designers.

On Friday the 11th, 72 Soul (that would be me but by then I will be schizophrenic) has the pleasure of warming up (before) and cooling down (after) the Fire of Ursula Rucker, courtesy of Cris Prolific's Blu Funk District at Tavernier. Ajaa.

J'Adore EP - Pierre Citron

During my "Baron" period, when I was unemployed, drifting.. I created a new musical persona: a french poet called Pierre Citron (Peter Lemon).

The son of Gainsbourg and Anna Karina, Pierre Citron is an unlucky fellow, who doesn't particularly love life but continues just the same, and sings/raps about his daily life, love, sausages and mindtrips in a Belgian way.

Now that I have found a job and shall soon be able to say, like all the normal people: "Sorry I've got no time, gotta run!", it is with the utmost pleasure that I give you the EP of Pierre Citron - "J'adore..", as a free download.

Vu De Quartier (2000)

In 2000, I made this sound montage with interviews with inhabitants of Molenbeek (Brussels) about public space in their town. For an anthropological documentary called "L'heure Bleu", we interviewed people on the streets, dealers, glandeurs & vendeurs, kids in youth houses rappin' on how the situation is now (i.e. in 2000). On the other hand, we spoke with retired people about the old days and life in general over a cup of tea. Featuring music by La Résistance, L'Ordonnance, and the song "L'étranger au Paradis" by Gloria Lasso - given to me by this friendly old lady called Clémence, together with a stack of old 45's.

Nine years later.. it still carries a message about the different attitudes, struggles and questions about living in the big city.

En 2000, j'avais fait un montage de sons et interviews recolté lors du tournage d'un documentaire (projet mémoire science culturelles) sur l'espace public à Molenbeek (Bruxelles). Interviews avec jeunes et habitants du quartier. Première rencontre avec Bruxelles d'un Flamand vite impressionné..

La musique vient d'un tout jeune La Résistance (La Rez), L'Ordonnance, et la chanson "L'étranger au Paradis" de Gloria Lasso - que j'avais reçu en vinyl 45T de Clémence, une vieille dame de Molenbeek.

Neuf ans plus tard, je me retrouve sur un projet pour améliorer la convivialité sur les transports en commun.. à Molenbeek. Vivre ensemble, ou co-exister.. dans cette grande ville, Bruxelles, avec toutes ces différentes attitudes, questions et révoltes.

After the bluesy hip hop trip Cherrywine, here comes another new project by Ishmael Butler from Digable Planets (best hip hop group to my taste, period.). It's all very neo-psychedelic hip hop and it's called :

SHABAZZ PALACES

Now this is all very deep neo-deconstructed flavored hip hop, very much NOT mainstream.. but it has Soul, for open minded ears. Just imagine a world where HIP HOP could have gone into any kind of creative direction, before mp3 disaster struck and it all went bling-bling and/or merely hardcore for the schmokers.. and you get this. Song titles like "32 leaves dipped in blackness making clouds forming altered carbon", abstract verses, phuturistic rhyme and reason for the New Age.

“The three insects from outer space have been infected like every other great group in hip-hop history by irreconcilable differences between the principle members.” In other words Ladybug (Mary Ann Viera) is walking away from the legendary trio with the trite cover up known as “creative differences.” Butterfly (Ishmael Butler) and Doodlebug (Craig Irving) will continue to collaborate.

Discovered some new music this week.. Heard, seen, smoked to.. and/or released in 2009 or beyond!

Mark Graham is a very talented geezer from Inglan' who makes Souly Psychedelic Squat Music. Très dope. Check out his Myspace and his new album "Catalyst Mixing Room" on Rehab Records.

Soulstice is a collaboration between American emcee Soulstice and Belgian beatmaker SBe. Together they made an "international concept album", Think Beyond Borders, released in 2009, buy it here. Talented artists from around the world including Monique Harcum, Krewcial & Zap Mama..

Crown City Rockers are a REAL hip hop crew from Oakland, just dropped the freshest album, The Day After Forever. Go to the microsite and download their "Soul" for free! Beats selling it to the devil.

I discovered Wax Tailor through the movie Paris, beautiful trippy hoppy beats from La Douce France.. New album is called In The Mood For Life, which is nice ;)

Speech Debelle is all over everybody's lips but this Tracy Chapman of hip hop delivered a pretty good album on Big Dada.. Speech Therapy.

Last Emperor did a track with Vinia Mojica on his latest album and it's pretty damn gud.

A Cat Called Fritz blew up the spot last weekend at Anattitude's Fly Girl Jam Brussels.. Very nice guys, down-to-earth independent spirit, they have a label called Coffee Break Records and some dope releases and beats to boot. Support and buy the 7inch, ya'll. Beat Drunx are producer One Cell, Rubski & Acrid Cast. Together with DJ Court-A-Sock they were another dope crew who made heads bop at Anattitude's Fly Girl Jam Brussels.. New album coming soon I hear, and we might have some exclusives on the radioshow, methinks.
