Beautiful Losers

I saw Belgian writer D. Verhulst on TV the other day. Whenever I see him, I have to smile and think back to the days we were masturbating together at boarding school. Well, we only did it once and it was a stupid initiation game anyway. Young boys.. For the record: I came first, making me the winner. I try not to come that fast these days.

"And suddenly you feel a little older.."

Poets are mostly scared little people, and writers are the greatest pretenders. All we do is put life into words. Sometimes we've lived the life we write about, making the living easier and the writing much better.

I love Charles Bukowski for telling the raw truth.
And for being one ugly alcoholic motherfucker, but a beautiful loser.

I love Leonard Cohen for turning the word into song.
Here's Seven reasons why Leonard Cohen is the next-best thing to God.

And here's a song:

La Société du Spectacle

Guy Debord was The Man. If you're not afraid to THINK once and a while, make the effort to watch his movie, based on his book, based on ... the world we're living in today.

Cool on the scene

Back on the scene, discreetly indeed..

As always, I'm not impressed with over-hyped soirées (Wackclub..) filled with grey people dressed in arty-farty blackness. Keep playing dead, it fits your attitude. Supaficial. If you're only ambition is to be SEEN there, the party's gonna be crowded with a lot of people just LOOKING..

What makes a good party is when the DJ's on the flyer play together with visible fun. No egos.
Fuck that hipness-drenched "One God, One DJ" culture. It's over son.

I enjoyed last nite at KaBoom, the kids got respect for the masters.. Wild. The nite before at The Heavies, a vintage selection for the connoiseurs.. And of course, always Niceness at Strictly.

I love it when there are several DJ's huddled together smoking drinking playing having fun spinning back to back without fronting. It's all love when it's a family thing. It ain't about the DJ's, it's about the Vibe, innit?

It's all good.. I feel the party scene is moving towards a certain kind of Togetherness again (thank the economy) and in my humble opinion, that CBS place is definitely the spot to watch out for these days. The host with the most...

The keyword is Collaboration, not competition.
And give the doorman a little something when you leave.
A smile opens doors that stay closed when you pose.

See you around..

Mad riddims

Alton Ellis, the Godfather of Rocksteady, is no more.. R.I.P.
Doing research for my radioshow, I stumbled upon the History of the Mad Mad riddim, originally recorded by Alton Ellis in '67.
This three-note horn or guitar line was re-used, interpreted and sampled... giving birth to over a 100 new songs (!) by the likes of Yellowman, KRS One, Black Star..

Read it all here.

How to be free

I'm reading a book by Tom Hodgkinson : "How to be free".
It's all about the right to useful unemployment, a subject very dear to me.
Freedom can't be found in a nine to five.. Work should be a creative pleasure, not an obligation.
So all fellow freeloaders .. go to http://idler.co.uk/ and ENJOY Life.

Everything is everything.
